Resolution Renovation

With 2011 just hours away, millions of people are just days away from breaking their New Years Resolutions.  Yes, we all know that it is very easy for us to give up our resolutions each year.  We do this because many of just don’t know how to set goals that will help us succeed.  Over the last several weeks I have been working on my SMART goals for 2011.  This process has helped me have a clearer vision of what I would like to accomplish in the next year.  Now SMART goals are not new by any means, but the acrostic does give some great guidelines for goals and can help you from failing on your Resolutions this year.

  • Specific = well defined goals that are easily understood.  If someone would read it they would understand what you are trying to do?
  • Measurable= having a goal that is measurable will help you track on what you are doing or not doing to obtain your goal.
  • Attainable= to many times our goals can be out of reach.  Make sure your goal is something that can be done.
  • Relevant= your  goal need to be something meaningful to achieve.
  • Time bound= goals need to have starting points and ending points.

This year, instead of busting your Resolution on January 2, Renovate your Resolution and try writing out SMART goals.

  1. I use the SMART principle when developing yearly performance standards for my crews at work. I recommend it for anyone setting goals no matter if it is in the business world or their everyday life.
